WRESTLING AT THE JABBOK

Genesis 32:22-32 (English) / 32:23-33 (Hebrew)

32:22 And he got up that night and he took his two wives, and his two female slaves, and his eleven boys, and he crossed the ford of the Jabbok.

23 And he took them and sent them over the stream, and sent over his possessions.

24 And Jacob was left alone; and a man wrestled with him until dawn.

25 And when he saw that he could not defeat him, then he touched his hip socket, and Jacob’s hip was dislocated as he wrestled with him.

26 And he said, “Let me go, for the dawn has come.” And he said, “I will not let you go, unless you bless me.”

27 And he said to him, “What is your name?” And he said, “Jacob.”

28 And he said, “Your name shall not be Jacob any more, but Israel, for you have striven with divine beings/God, and with men, and you have prevailed.”

29 And Jacob asked, “Please tell me your name.” And he said, “Why do you ask my name?” And he blessed him there.

30 And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel, saying, “For I have seen God/a divine being face to face, and my life was saved.”

31 And the sun rose upon him as he passed Penuel, and he was limping on his hip.

32 Therefore to this day the children of Israel do not eat the sinew of the thigh that is on the hip socket, because he touched Jacob on the hip socket at the sinew of the thigh.
